The Musicians

The contribution of the musicians has been the most well
kept secret of the success of Carnival of Carols - year
after year. In their own inimitable styles and individual
capacities they are geniuses. But it is when they come
together - once a year - in front of this huge ensemble of
children that they are at their wits as well as at their
zenith.
The musicians group is small but a wonderful foursome to
whom 'service is beyond the call of duty'. All of them are
busy as ever with their own lives, and more so during the
hectic season of Christmas, but when Carnival of Carols
comes around, they simply pack all their troubles in their
old kit bag, smile and are there!
Thank you for your invaluable help - the children of the
Archdiocese of Karachi will remember you all their lives.
Here's an intro to each one of them:
Desmond Vaz - The conductor. His magic wand brings
the best out of all the children - from the distractive
4-year olds to the impulsive 14 year olds! He can 'see' each
one of the children with his heart and ears. And that my
friends, is the stunning revelation of this great musician's
talent and love for children.
Roland de Souza - The lead-guitarist. His masterful
dexterity in changing chords to catch-up with the children's
wavering voices is the confidence with which he manages the
timing and continuity of the carols. Together with Desmond
and Alan Goveas they make an incredible trio.
Alan Goveas - The back-up guitarist. He is truly a
Dominic Savio to the thousands of children whom he has
trained at Fatima, many of them now happily married with
their own kids and still eager to assist him whenever
needed. Alan organizes the 'Back-up Choir' comprising of
older children (the youth).
Ferdinand Goveas - He provides the bass that makes
the singing of children and the music sound so good, rich in
harmony and perfect in melody. Well done Ferdi, keep it up!
The Back-up Choir - Every year we have two groups of
older children, youth in their teens from Our Lady of Fatima
(The Dominc Savio Choir) and the St. Lawrence's Children's
Choir.
About 40 of these young men & women are spread amongst the
400-odd children so that they act as back-up vocals to the
kids and also to maintain the flow of the performance.
